Ask Wade- What is tax status of affiliates?
Mar 18, 2008 Ask Wade
Hi Wade
I would like to know if an Affiliate Marketer is Self-employed or an Independent Contractor?
I ask this question for tax purposes. Some Affiliate sites say self-employed and others say Independent Contractors. The IRS makes a distinction! I am confused, what do you say is correct?
Thank You Sincerely,
Evette
Evette,
Thank you for your question. Most of the affiliate agreements that I have seen have referred to affiliates as independant contractors who receive an IRS form 1099 (statement of earnings) for any commissions earned over $600 per year.
I’m not a tax specialist by any means, but this is what I have seen most commonly and what I have used in the programs I run.
Your best bet is always to consult an accountant/tax prep specialist.
God Bless,
Wade

Refreshing difference on Celebrity Apprentice (made for boring TV)
Mar 18, 2008 Faith in Culture

I was watching Celebrity Apprentice last week really late one night and all was normal until Trace Atkins and Stephen Baldwin ended up in the board room.
If you didn’t know Stephen is a “born-again” Christian who previously had asked to leave the game or switch teams to keep from having to compromise his principals by continuing to work with sleazeball Piers Morgan.
I get the feeling that Trace is a Christian as well… which made for the most boring Board Room in Apprentice History… as both players had agreed that ” if both of us put forth a Righteous effort” that they wouldn’t try to cut each others throats in the boardroom.. and would operate with integrity and accept “The Donald’s” call.
In the end… it looked like Trace had delivered more value and more charity funds raised in the recent challenges, so Baldwin was voted off, and they shook hands, hugged and wished each other the best.
No drama.. no lying, no back stabbing. How refreshing… (How boring)

Joel Comm on TextCastLive from Affiliate Summit
Mar 17, 2008 affiliate marketing tools
Here’s part 2 of my chat with Joel Comm from Affiliate Summit West 2008. In this section, Joel and I chat about a new venture he’s involved in TextCastLive.
TextCastLive is a service/tool that allows marketers (merchant or affiliate) to build double opt-in marketing lists of mobile phone numbers, then market to them using text mesages. Joel maintains that email marketing is dead or dying and that open rates on email are abysmal. We all check our text messages when they come in and well designed marketing campaigns can generate great results.
If you are looking for a new way to connect with your customers and prospects, give TextCastLive a try, especially if your audience is X or Y generation and hyper connected to their mobile phone.

Affiliate Summit West- Interview with Joel Comm part 1
Mar 14, 2008 Affiliate Summit West
Due to illness, I missed a lot of the action at Affiliate Summit West including a lot of my beloved CAMA Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues.
As the Summit wrapped up on Tuesday, I got the chance to sit down with Joel Comm of the The Next Internet Millionaire and Secret Classroom fame (not to mention a really awesome course on monetizing your site with Google Adsense) and get his feedback on the Brunch and on Christian events at industry events in general.
We also chatted about the Secret Classroom and TextCastLive, a really interesting new mobile phone marketing platform project he is involved in. Those videos to come.
God Bless,
Wade

Any suggestions for CAMA activity in Boston?
Mar 10, 2008 Affiliate Summit East
It’s been announced that Affiliate Summit East 2008 will be held in Boston, August 10-12 at The Seaport Hotel.
The hotel looks like a pretty nice one and I’m stoked to be going to Boston. Anyone who knows me knows that the closest thing toa secondary religion with me is Baseball and Fenway Park in Boston is one of the shrines that I am due to make a pilgrimage to.
We’re looking for feedback on ideas for a CAMA fellowship activity for the Sunday morning of the show. If you are from the area, or just have some ideas, we’d love to hear from you.
Please get in touch using the contact form if you have any ideas.
God Bless,
Wade Tonkin

Really awesome content coming this month
Mar 10, 2008 Site Announcements
Sorry I’ve been low profile lately… been extremely busy getting my GTO Management venture off the ground (one of the projects that pays the bills.) and I regret that have let the CAM blog suffer.
No longer.
I have a ton of awesome video content coming up in the coming weeks including
- A 3-4 part video interview with Jason Stanley Marshall - a contestant from the Next Internet Millionaire online reality show
- A 2 part video interview with Joel Comm - host of the Next Internet Millionaire and founder of the FamilyFirst.com blog and his new projects The Secret Classroom
and TextCastLive
- A 2 part video interview with Geno Prussakov, affiliate manager and author of the books A Practical Guide to Affiliate Marketing
and Online Marketing Through Consumers’ Eyes
- Video from Colin MacDougal of The Constant Conversation on how you can generate top search engine rankings using social media.
What do all these folks have in common? They are BELIEVERS like you and me who are earning great revenue through their online projects and doing it with a Christian ethics.
So… stay tuned - it’s going to be a busy March on ChristianAffiliateMarketers.com
God Bless,
Wade Tonkin
